ALISS  Womens History Month showcase 2024

2024 is an Olympic Year and in honour of the occasion. This special event showcased the real lived experiences of sportswomen from a variety of arenas, who offered insight into their career paths, challenges and thoughts on inclusive participation. We also introduced some historical treasures from several leading library collections and archives on the same theme.

Maureen McGonigle – Founder of Scottish Women in Sport
Maureen is Founder and CEO of Scottish Women in Sport where the vision is for a world where women and girls have equal and fair opportunities in sport. She also chairs Scottish Sports Futures, an organisation that uses the power of sport and physical activity to engage with young people in Scotland and empower them to be confident, healthy and happy. A member of the Scottish FA Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Board as well as a member of the Advisory Group for the Equal Media and Culture in Scotland. Maureen has been involved in sports administration for over 35 years. Executive Administrator of Scottish Women’s Football till December 2013, Maureen was the first female Scottish FA Council Member and Non-Professional Game Board member in football in Scotland. She was the first Scottish FA female life member.

Sophie Hurst, a Writing for Performance student from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, has had a Writers in Residence unit at the Women’s Library at LSE. Her talk presented amazing work on how the archives had inspired her creative work. It included slides showing the presentation of sports women in the media using the er research on Women in Sport, an uncatalogued archive in the Women’s Library.

Ailsa Wyllie, Sport Scotland. A former international hockey player Ailsa has been involved in sport both personally and professionally for most her life. Working in sports development over the last 20 years Ailsa has a focus on women and girls in sport helping to look at the barriers to participation and leading across all ages. Reflecting on societal changes in more recent times Ailsa highlighted some of the work being done at all levels from girls, teenage years, adults and athletes to try and buck the trend of less girls and women living active lives.
